The Lonely Road Challenge
In June 2007, Thabang Skwambane (The Lonely Road founder) embarked on The Lonely Road Challenge – cycling alone and unsupported across six countries from Johannesburg to Tanzania, a distance of nearly 5,500Km, and then climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with a team of 11 climbers.
The purpose of The Lonely Road Challenge was to raise awareness and financial support for the plight of Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Southern Africa. Thabang's journey was a poignant reminder of the lives of children who grow up alone and unsupported through childhood and adolescence, and once they pass this milestone they are expected to become a productive part of society - a “mountain” to climb at the end of such a “Lonely Road”.
The Lonely Road Foundation (TLRF) is a Sub-Saharan African development charity, aiming to bring life, hope and opportunity to children in South Africa who have been orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS.
The primary objective of The Lonely Road Foundation is to provide rural communities with access to resources that will assist them in supporting their orphans and vulnerable children, including those in child-headed households, and in ensuring these children have every opportunity to survive and thrive.
